Introduction to media representations. 06/09/23
L/o: To explore the concept of representation & stereotypes.
Representation
- The media offers the audience an interpretation of the world.
- It is a Re presentation of the events, people and places.
I think the representation is positive because they show how everyone is included and everyone can do the olympics. They call them the super humans as they have a disability and they carry on going to get to the olympics. It shows all different types of disability. it is represented well and in a positive way.
- determined
- strong
- positive
- brave
- focused
- powerful
- un-typical

they both have their shirts tucked in
the boy has mulitple bags on
they are wearing very basic clothes
they dont have someone to pick them up they are walking home
its only the two of them which suggests that they might not have many friends or they are the only ones that walk home
they are awkward when they talk to each other ( socially awkward due to not having many friends)
the boy has headphones around his neck
Nanny- female, in some sort of uniform, kind hearted, likes kids, older,
Nurse- in uniform, female, kind, likes helping others, smart, very young or older,
Teenager- moody, wears dark comfy clothing, likes being alone, rebellious,
Astronaut- determined, strong minded, usually a male,

Tattoo Lover- cold hearted , likes art, mind full, muscly man, mainly males, unique,
The advert challenges stereotypes by asking men if they are in a way brave enough to be a nurse. This is because some men may think it is embarrassing to have a job that is normally classed as a women's job. It also shows men then even if they become a nurse they can still do things in their spare time that are classes as manly things to do like play golf, surf and play the electric guitar, the advert was made to show men that they can do this job and still be classed as a man and they can still do things they like to do.
educating the east end
the teachers are very strict about what the students are doing and how they are dressed but on the other hand they are very supportive towards the students, all of the students that are in the trailer seem very happy to be at that school and although a few of them seem to have a hard time there they are all supported by the staff there. the teachers also feel like they can have a joke with their students.
The teachers are dressed smartly and they can. be strict. but some of them are chilled out but they are all supportive towards the students and help them when they need help
The students all follow the uniform rules but some of them don't want to tuck their shirt in so they get told off for not following the rules.
Some of the teachers have a joke with the students and they feel comfortable enough to joke around with each other but some other teachers may make the students feel like they cant joke around with them.

The differences between the two magazine cover are:
- The colour schemes are completely different, pink, purple for the aimed towards women and blue, grey/ navy for the one aimed for men because they are stereotypical colours for the two genders
- One is about romance and losing weight and the other is about fashion for men
- They both use different fonts
- They both use different shot types( in the cosmo one they use a long shot so you can see her body/outfit whereas in the GQ one thy use a close up shot so you can see his wedding ring on his finger and his facial expression)
- The mastheads are in different positions ( the cosmo on is behind carrie underwood and the GQ one is over David Beckham because if ti was behind him you wouldn't be able to see the Q in the name of the magazine and it would look like it just says G)
In cosmopolitan woman is represented as messy (by the cover lines) and very bright and bubbly (the colour scheme). The whole cover is about attracting men and how to lose weight there is nothing about work or making money although there is stuff on about how to save money. also you would expect it to be about fashion but it isn't
In GQ men is represented as clean ( shown by the cover lines) and concentrated on work ( by the outfit he is wearing). theres nothing on attracting woman on the cover it is all about sport and working in the office. You would expect it to be a little bit about how to attract women but it is all about sport and work and fashion.
They both have celebrities that have stereotypical jobs for their gender.
- The first magazine cover represents men as people who have good fashion sense.
- The second magazine cover represents woman as people who wear very revealing clothes ( Rihanna isn't wearing anything on her top half and is covering herself with her arms)
- In the second magazine they used a mid shot and the used her hands the cover herself.
- In the first magazine Tom Daley is represented as stereotypically gay because of the colours and clothes he is wearing and how he is stood.
- In the second magazine they used Rihanna as the star vehicle so it draws attention of her male fans to read/purchase the magazine.

Exam style magazine question. 20/09/23
L/o: To write and structure an effective exam style question.
The two covers represent gender very differently. Cosmopolitan represents Tom Daley in an anti-stereotypical way. For example he has been dressed in more feminine clothing both in colour and style. However, as a gay man, this is more stereotypical. on the other hand, there are more stereotypically masculine representations with the tattoo and the muscular physique. He is also shown in an anti-stereotypical way because of the type of magazine he is featured in and how he is dressed. if there is a male star vehicle on the cover of a magazine aimed towards female audiences it is normally a man without a top on showing off his muscles not a man dressed in stereotypically gay clothing.
GQ represents Rihanna in a stereotypical way. For example she has been objectified by not have any clothes on this is because of male gaze. On the other hand the colour scheme is aimed towards a more male audience this is because GQ is aimed towards a male audience instead of a female audience. The use of Rihanna represents gender by having her staring into the camera/audience's eyes to catch the eye of who ever is looking at the magazine this is because men are more likely to pick up the magazine if it catches his eyes rather than a woman looking to the floor. Gender is represented in an stereotypical way because she is used on the front of the magazine with a snake rapped around her because in greek mythology medusa was a woman who thought she was the prettiest person so someone made her so ugly if anyone looked at her they would be turned to stone this might be why they got Rihanna to stare into the camera.
The similarities of the the two covers are that they use a the opposite gender as the star vehicle to catch the audiences eye. A difference is that in Cosmopolitan they match the clothing Tom Daley is wearing with the colour scheme of the cover whereas in GQ they keep the colour scheme of the cover different to the colour scheme of what Rihanna has on ( they haven't given Rihanna clothes to wear to match the colour scheme.

Homework-01/10/23
In this GQ magazine cover they have used the star vehicle as Taylor Swift with the main cover line’Taylor Swift rules the world and we are her loyal subjects’ this shows lots of people look up to her even males and that they should treat her like she is a queen. They have made her look into the camera to make it look like she is staring right at you this is to catch the attention of people as they walk past. Taylor swift has been represented as a queen in this due to the main cover line but she hasn’t been dressed as a queen which shows anyone can be a queen/king even if they don’t look a certain way. The lexis is in sans serif which is usually seen as a masculine text is the only lexis used in the cover.

The brand identity of Vogue is aimed towards people with lots of money and who are willing to spend money on expensive things. Do now
1) fashion, classy, men
2) expensive, money, women
1) In GQ when there is a women on the front she doesn't have many clothes on and usually you can see most of her body this is because women have been sexually objectified and are put on there to grab the attention of the men reading the magazine. However when there is a male one the front he is often fully clothed and they use a mid shot or above you can very rarely see the whole of a males body on the front of the magazine it is also not common to see a male fully clothed even if they are known for their fitness but women are very rarely fully clothed on the front of the cover.
2) GQ targets their audience ( well educated men ) by putting people on the front that the men reading it are intrigued in or they put women on the front who don't have many clothes on so it catches the readers eyes.
3) GQ represents males as very classy and put together by putting men on the front that are dressed in very expensive and fancy looking clothes this presents men in a very different way to what they represent women as. GQ represent women in a different way to men as they always have fewer clothes on then men do and they are always looking provocatively at the camera to catch the readers eye as they are going through it.

Do now-
The shot type is close up so you can see what is being reflected in his glasses.
The font used is mainly sans serif is but serif is used as well.
The colour palette is very basic with beige being the accent colour.
Raheem Sterling
He has a MBE and is an professional english footballer who plays as a winger and attacking midfielder for premier league club Manchester City and the England national team. He was the fifth youngest player to represent England when he played against Sweden in 2012. In 2016, Sterling was the nations most expensive player when he was bought by Manchester City. In 2018, whilst playing against Chelsea, Sterling was subjected to racist taunts from Chelsea fans.
Sterling has faced racist behaviour whilst playing football from social media and in Chelsea fans whilst going to get the ball during a game when he was playing a game against them with his team at the time Manchester City. In 2019 after the racist taunts he decided to speak up about the racism he had experienced in football and in general ( the newspaper making two different stories about him and another young white player who bought houses for their mums but they were described in very different ways). The racial issues were that no one could pin point who was starting the racial comments and taunts so the Public order act and Football spectators act was very difficult to enforce if they didn't know who was doing it in a crowd of 50,000-60,000 people. Sterling was ready to speak up about the racial comments after putting up with it for a while, he started to speak out to try to start to stop the racism not only he was experiencing but other footballers and has since been part of charities that are trying to help stop all of the racism being used and heard across football and in general.
The masthead is in a bold and larger sans serif front. the colour used is a deep gold connotating wealth but also religion in the context of the rest of the cover. The colour gold is in juxtaposition to the black used for sterlings wings already implying there will be binary oppositions in this cover.
Guardian Angel- A multitude of meanings and readings
1) He is a winger in football playing on the sides or he wings
2) He protects other black players from further racial incidents through his campaigning
3) He was seen as an 'evil' person but in reality seems on the whole to be a good person.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
03/11/23
-his wings might have something to do with his position when he plays football (winger)
-he confidently showing off his tattoos even tho he was negatively judge for one of his tattoos on his leg
-he has black wings on which sort of shows he in and angle of people who have experienced racist comments.
- the colour black could relate to his fight against racism and his fight to get racism out of football
-the wings connate him being an angle even tho normally angles are shown as being in all white him having black wings and wearing black clothes to show that black people are good people and shouldn't be discriminated against.
- the jewellery shows his status and how wealthy he is.
Exam Question.
Explore how this front cover of GQ magazine uses media language to communicate meanings:
-images
-text/written language
-layout and design
This cover of GQ magazine uses media language to communicate a lot of different meanings. In the image Raheem Sterling (RS) has black wings which connotes that he is an angel which could have something to do with his position he plays in football (winger) but could also have something to do with religion (RS is religious) and that typically angels are seen wearing white but him being in black shows that angels can be any colour angels typically being white may make people think that only white people can be angels but people of different ethnicity can also be angels too. The way he is stood shows he is a very confident person and has a status that he lives up to. The fact that the camera shot is a low angle long shot makes him look like he is above other people but then also goes back to being an angel and how angels are always higher up than us. He is also confidently showing off his tattoos even though he was previously negatively judged for a tattoo he got on his leg as a memorial for his dad but it also shows what his weapon is which is his right foot as he shoots with that foot, even after this he wants to show off his tattoos which shows masculinity. RS has a lot of black on which can have something to do with the racial problems he has come against or the racism that he is fighting against, Sterling is fighting to get racism out of football and this could be shown through the dark clothes he is wearing. The jewellery he is wearing shows he has a lot of money and has status due to his football profession. The way Sterling is stood shows he is confident and that people look up to him as a football player but also as someone who is confident enough to stand up against racism and wants to get rid of it in football and in other places.
The colour palette of the text is gold, black, white and orange shows the good vs evil side of the magazine although black usually connotes to evil and darkness in this magazine cover it is used to show that not just a few colours connote to good things but they all can if you look at it in a certain way. The main cover line being in gold and saying 'guardian angel' shows that he has a status and RS has a place in the world of football but it also has more religious connotations of royalty and wealth. The fact that the writing is mostly in a sans serif font shows that there is a sense of masculinity but there are a few parts that are in a serif font ('guardian angel') which gives a slight sense that there is a professional side to this cover.

ethnic representations

having someone who isnt white on the front of the magazine is non-stereotypical
-men are represented as powerful because of the way he is looking at the camera and his clothing, he is in a suit while the women isn't in fancy clothes.
- he is shown to have money or has a well paying job as he is wearing a suit and looks very classy.

1. masculine
2. powerful
3. confident
4. yes because they have included a black person as the star vehicle and they haven't changed the way he is ( they haven't changed they way people will look at him) and to highlight what his views are on the racist comments being said in football and all over the world.
gender representations
the choice to represent Sterling topless with tattoos on show reinforces the stereotype of men as having to be hyper masculine, strong and muscular. The black wings represent him as a supernatural figure suggesting his extraordinary skills on the pitch.. The wings combined with the main cover line 'Guardian Angel' and the low angle shot construct him as a protective figure, fighting for justice. His wide stance and the choice of costume represent hi as a dominant, confident figure.
His thick silver jewellery reinforces the capitalist ideology that for a man to be thought of as successful you must be wealthy and make a lot of money.
All the men named on the cover are represented as successful in their own field, which confirms to the genre conventions of glossy magazines.
For modern men there is a societal expectation that they must 'have it all'- health, wealth and strength- and the image of Sterling supports this as he epitomises all three.
ethnic representations
using a hugely successful black cover star as their dominant image. presenting a role model for its readers and someone to aspire to be like.
'how Raheem Sterling saved football from its self' makes the reader understand the meaning that h is a success on a much grander scale than just the pitch he is an influencer. more modern representation of ethnicity and counters the old fashioned stereotypes as black men as criminals or lower status.
Diverse range of ethnicity on the cover is unusual for GQ and lifestyle magazines in general( star vehicle& cover lines).
-focuses on black lives matter.
-stereotypical male topics like business and star wars etc.
-he looks very serious and determined to get something done or to prove something.
-unusual for GQ to include positive black representations.
-young black men with their hoods up have connotations of criminality and gangs, however the white hood represents pure, good which don't go with the idea of criminality.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Men are represented as powerful because of the way he is looking at the camera and he looks as if he has a high paying job as he has a suit on, while the women doesn't look to be in clothes that cover her body. The camera angle is a mid shot as you can see from his waist up. The jewellery that the women is wearing on her wrist suggests she has money to spend on expensive looking jewellery and to have her nails done regularly. The fact that the women has he hand on his head could suggest that she has her hand on his head could suggest she has power over him, stereotypically men normally have power oven women but this breaks the stereotype and makes it suggest that the female has power over him.

high end design brands
-Vogue is aimed at ABC1 fashion and style conscious women who are educated, sophisicated and wealthy
-Whilst it traditionally targeted an older female audience of 30-40 year ols, you could say that this audience has now broadened to appeal to, inspire and empower younger readers too, as well as much more culturally diverse audience, under the influence of a new editor.
-To appeal to advertisers , vogue emphasises wealth and status of its ABC1 readership who spend on average £8,000 a year on fashion and over a thousand pounds a year on cosmetics.
Vogue context
- Historically in magazines including Vogue under represented black and asian in their front covers and throughout their magazines until 2014 when they started including black and asian models.
Vogue comparisons
The target audience is young women in the ABC1 class who are educated well-payed women. They use a number of famous women ( and sometimes men) that lots of people know and may be inspired by and use them as their star vehicle. Vogue also includes things that might interest the readers in the cover lines. Vogue represents gender by including a female covered up but with very expensive looking clothes on, they also used a black cover star (Rihanna) to include a different ethnicity in their covers as they were previously known for not including may people that were from a different ethnic group.
In the left cover they have used a straight white male cover star (Harry styles) but in the right cover they have included a straight black female cover which is normal for vogue but they have used a cover star from a different ethnic group (Rihanna). They have been very diverse with these two covers and it shows how they have changed, having a male on a women's fashion cover is very unusual.
Malala
- She is an international symbol for the fight of women's education.
- She was shot in 2012 by a Taliban gunman.
- She is the youngest nobel prize laureate .
- Started to gain notoriety from standing up to the Taliban.
- Ehsanullah Eshan is responsible for shooting Malala.
- She is 26 but she was 15 when she got shot and 17 when she won her nobel peace prize.
- She got shot because she went to school after it was banned for women to go to school.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Malala was shot in 2012 for going to school and ever since she has been making her voice heard about how women should have the right to education and shouldn't be stopped from going to school. She started to gain notoriety for standing up to the Taliban, she is an international symbol for the fight of women's education. After women was banned for going to school and getting an education it caused her to want to speak up and wanted to stop the Taliban from stopping women from going to school and work.
The camera angle is a mid shot and at her eye level so she can look into the camera to catch the readers eye as they pick it up. The way the clothes she is wearing and the background is red may suggest she has power and red suggests anger and determination. The connotations of the colour red could be blood as she got shot in the head and could symbolise the blood that would've come from the wound that she got from the Taliban.
The writing is mainly in serif font which gives the cover a modern and feminine look over it which suggests that magazine is for females and Malala is international symbol for the fight for women's right to an education.
The colour palette is red silver and black with the accent colour of white as the only writing in white is the writing that says 'The extraordinary life of Malala' so it brings the readers attention to it as it is a different colour to the rest. The cover line that says 'fighting talk' isn't stereotypical for the magazine as it is a women's fashion magazine and fighting is a stereotypically male thing to do so for it to be on the cover of a women's fashion magazine isn't normal which may make the reader to want to read that specific part of the magazine as it has something to do with what Malala does and why she might be on the cover of the magazine.
Malala is wearing gold jewellery that suggests she has money to pay for the jewellery but its looks very special to her as she is holding close to her and not really showing what is on the rings as it might have something to do with something important to her and her family but also what she fights for.
The layout of the magazine is a Z shape so the cover lines catch people's eye as they read around the cover as there is only one cover line on the right and the rest are on the left, Malala is more on the left than the right which might be why there is only one cover line on the left instead of more as they might cover her up.
The white clearly contrasts with the red background celebrating her name and here status Malala's name and her importance is highlighted and framed by italicised text. 'Survivor' suggests she has overcome being a victim and is now powerful 'activist' taking a political stance to drive her own.

Do now
- the clothes she is wearing
- the colour palette
- camera angle and shot type (direct address to seem confident)
- her name as the anchorage is the biggest bit of writing other than the masthead
- the red background and clothes shows her passion for what she is fighting against and what she is fighting for.
Vogue is more diverse in age, gender, ethnicity and size across their magazines. They are a lot better than other magazines at being diverse with who they use on their magazine covers after not being very good with it for quite a long time they are becoming better with being diverse.
How we can see diversity?
We can see diversity because they have used a non-white star vehicle and she has a head scarf on covering part of her head. They have also included black peoples name in the cover lines. They show diversity by having Malala on the front who is a muslim herself. She is shown to be a powerful muslim woman as she doesn't have a dominant male with her as most muslim women do which makes them very timid and reliant on the male with them whereas Malala is very anti-stereotypical for a muslim woman.
How is 'being female' represented?
This cover has gone against the stereotypes of 'being female' as their cover star is (Malala) known for fighting for what she believes in and fighting against the Taliban so other young females can have the right to an education they deserve, fighting for what they believe in is very anti-stereotypical for a female as males are normally the ones fighting for whats right. 'being female' is seen as not being as strong as men and not having a voice that needs to be heard when she wants to fight for something as women can be seen as weak and vulnerable. However the cover line 'fighting talk' might empower women to fight for what they believe in and stand up for what is right. Even tho they have put a very anti-stereotypical woman on the front their cover lines are very stereotypical for women as they are about beauty, dating and fashion which is normally a very stereotypical for a woman but it also includes anti-stereotypical cover line which may empower women. In the cover there is a sense of class with the silk and red which creates a classy sophisticated look which is associated with women.

The use of red used creates a classy and sophisticated look which can be associated with women. Historically muslims have been seen as criminals and associated with violence, Muslim women have always been seen as very timid and having a dominant male with them who may do the fighting for what they believe in whereas Malala has broken those stereotypes by not having a dominant male with her and she fights for what she believes in and stands up to whats right. Having the masthead over Malala shows that she is good enough to be featured in the magazine and the cover as previously they didn't really have a diverse selection of covers with people who aren't white or have a different ethnicity but now are including a selection of different ethnicities.

Homework-28/11/23
The front cover uses a star vehicle that they wouldn’t normally use but as recently they have been becoming better with showing diversity they have started to include people of different ethnicity. Malala who is known for standing up to the Taliban and being shot in the head for going to school is the star vehicle of this cover. The camera angle is a medium close up shot so the focus is on her face and the head scar she is wearing to show her religion. The focus is on her because they have used direct address when she looks directly into the camera. The fact that the masthead is over her shows she is worthy to be on this magazines front cover. Having ‘fighting talk’ as one of the cover lines is very anti-stereotypical for a women’s magazine and may be used to empower women to fight for what they want and to stand up to what they believe in as many women don’t do this. Most of the text is in a serif font which gives the front cover a feminine and classy look to it.

L/o: to practise comparing representations in two covers.
Do now.
-confident
-powerful
-feminine
similarities:
-feminine lifestyle magazines
- direct address to show power
- the main cover line is also the anchorage text
differences:
- malala has some -anti-stereotypical cover lines for a women's lifestyle magazine
- camera shots- malala medium close up shot focus on her face. Kim medium long shot focus on her body.
- The main cover line in the Malala one is her first name whereas the main cover line in the Kim one isn't her name.
-the text
The two magazine covers represent gender in an empowered way but in their own ways. There are the a different amount of similarities and differences with there being more differences through the two covers.
In the two magazines both use the main cover line as the anchorage text. They also use the cover stars name int he main cover line. Having the anchorage text as the main cover line shows that this particular cover line is important because they have it as the anchorage text meaning it has something to do with the image that is being used. Although they both don't have the cover stars name in them it still creates effect with linking to the image. This makes women represented as empowered and confident.
In the Malala some of the cover lines are anti-stereotypical for a women's lifestyle magazine as one of the cover lines is 'fighting talk' which can be used to empower women to fight for what they believe in and what they think is right. This is an anti-stereotypical thing to have on a women's lifestyle magazine because they are normally about fashion and/or beauty that is stereotypically a feminine thing to have or read about. However the cover lines on the Kim magazine cover is about beauty and fashion which is stereotypical for the type of magazine it is. The cover line 'the easy leather trouser' shows that the magazine is about fashion and something stereotypical for a feminine magazine. This creates the image of having leather trousers easy to put on which is something to do with fashion and what women might expect to read about in the magazine instead of fighting as that is a very anti-stereotypical thing to have in a omens lifestyle magazine.
The shot types in both magazines are different. The shot type in the Kim cover is a medium long shot which creates the focus on here body and what she is wearing as many people ready the magazine may think that what she is wearing is fashionable and want to see the whole outfit not just part of it. The shot type also may make the reader look where her hands are as it is near the anchorage text so it might make the reader read the anchorage text first. Whereas the shot type in the Malala cover is a medium close up which brings the focus onto her face and what her hands are doing. Having the focus on her face makes people look at her eyes as she is using direct address. Her hands are being held close to her face and you can see jewellery on her fingers that looks expensive and very important to her as she is holding it close to her but also shows she can now afford having expensive jewellery. Having the focus on her face brings attention to the head scarf she is wearing which may show she is religious.
The text in the Malala is mainly a serif font which creates a feminine look over the magazine. This makes the cover look very classy. Making the 'fighting talk' cover a serif font sort of takes away the anti-stereotypical theme away as the text make it look very feminine. On the other hand they text on the Kim cover is mainly a sans serif font this creates a modern look over the cover but has '70 million fans and she's not done yet' in a serif font which may draw the readers attention to that specific part as it is the only cover line with the serif font so looks different to the rest. This also creates a very modern classy look over the whole cover.
There are more differences than similarities over the Malala cover and the Kim cover over all as the Malala one goes against their normal stereotypes of Vogue but with them now being more diverse the cover is more stereotypical for them now whereas the Kim one stays very stereotypical for a women's lifestyle magazine.

Great work!
WWW: fairly detailed and appropriate analysis of both products with accurate terminology
EBI: I think you can be less vague with your judgment - especially in the conclusion. You say that there are both similarities and differences, so decide what they do differently. It can't be wrong!
